When the weather in the fall turns cold and blustery, move your fall cleaning projects to the indoors and work on some of the areas of your modern house plan that get neglected during your spring cleaning. Often spring cleaning is when the real “nitty gritty” cleaning occurs each year for most homeowners. They bend and stoop tackling baseboards, floors, windows and other areas that need to be tended to. There are many ways to “clean” and keep your home and life clean and less cluttered.
Get your heating and furnace company out to your home and have them inspect and clean your system before it gets cold enough that the unit kicks on. At this time, make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working properly. If have a fireplace in your home, be sure to check the flue for any obstructions such as leaves or a bird’s nest. Now is the ideal time to weatherproof your home’s windows and doors. This will lower your heating bills throughout the winter and keep everyone from complaining that it feels like they are living in a home built from garage plans!
Many homeowners swap out their wardrobes from winter to summer and vice versa, so before you go through the motions of storing away your summer clothes, look through them. If you haven’t worn some of the items in the last two years, then now is the perfect time to donate them. Hall closets are one of those dumping grounds that suddenly become crammed with items. Do yourself a favor and go through all of your coats and donate those that are no longer worn or don’t fit.
Linen closets are another spot in those small home plans that slowly accumulate items throughout the year. If you have sheets that are only used in the summer, then be sure to wash and store them higher than the cozy flannel sheets that will more likely be grabbed for use through the winter. Make sure any blankets are moved into the closet so family members can find them easily when they need one for their bed at night.
Now that it’s cold and you no longer spend time outdoors, why not purge old files? If you still have paper files, then you will most likely find plenty of outdated documents that can be recycled. Make copies of your credit cards, banking information, insurance policies, etc. and put them in a lock box for safe keeping. One final spot that often is overlooked is your car’s glove box. Often random items like fast food restaurant napkins, mints, lip balms and other items end up there. So, take a look and clean it out.
